Google has updated its privacy policy to spell out how personal AI tools connect to its advertising machine. Under the revised terms, opting into personalized AI features in Search or Gemini Apps allows Google to serve targeted ads based on your private files.
Effective October 16, 2026, the policy states that users who connect Google Photos, Drive, or Gmail to power custom AI answers may see those signals feed into ad targeting. Android Authority first spotted the update.
For nearly a decade, Google avoided using private inbox content to sell ads. That protection remains active by default. But the moment you connect your files to Google’s new Personal Intelligence features, that privacy firewall falls.

What the Revised Policy Text Actually Says
Google’s updated policy terms explain the data handoff clearly:
“You may choose to allow certain Google services, including services like Search or Gemini Apps, to access data from other Google services you use, such as Google Photos and Workspace apps like Gmail and Drive, in order to provide you with a more personalized experience, subject to the policies and settings of the accessing service. For example, Search may process some of the data that you allow Search to access to personalize content, including ads.”
Google Privacy Policy, Effective October 16, 2026
The policy clarifies that Google still does not show personalized ads based on Drive, Gmail, or Photos by default. However, that changes if you connect those apps to services like Search that support personalized ads.
In practice, if you ask Gemini to plan a trip using flight confirmations in your inbox, Search can use that context to serve you hotel and rental car ads.
Where Personal Intelligence Is Blocked
Google first unveiled Personal Intelligence for Gemini in January 2026. The beta feature combines email records, photo metadata, and chat history preferences to generate tailored answers.
Google is currently rolling out the beta to adult users globally. However, strict data protection laws keep the feature out of several major territories:
- The European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland (blocked under GDPR cross-service profiling rules).
- The United Kingdom (blocked under UK data privacy regulations).
- Nigeria (blocked under local consumer data protection statutes).
How to Opt Out and Disconnect Apps
Users who prefer to keep their files out of Google’s ad ecosystem can manage their settings in two ways:
- Disconnect Apps in Gemini: Open Gemini settings, view Connected Services, and remove access for Gmail, Google Photos, or Drive.
- Disable Search Personalization: Visit
google.com/search-personalizationto turn off personalized recommendations and ad signals across Search tools.
OpenAI’s Contrasting Ad Model
Google’s policy shift highlights a broader move toward monetizing conversational AI. In January 2026, OpenAI began displaying ads to adult users on free and ChatGPT Go tiers in the United States.
Earlier this week, OpenAI expanded ads on ChatGPT to 26 more nations, reaching 89 total markets across Latin America, Europe, Africa, and Asia.
Yet OpenAI takes a different approach to data separation. The company maintains that it keeps chats private from advertisers, labels ads distinctly from answers, and does not use conversation logs to personalize sponsor placements.
For Google, advertising remains its financial core. As conversational AI replaces traditional search queries, Google is building bridges to ensure your personal data continues to power commercial ads.
